Did I make a huge mistake? Looking for input on Dell Latitude 5420.
Main Post:
I just purchased a Dell Latitude 5420 from the Dell refurbished site. It was $559. Specs to follow, but I am now reading that there are issues with the touchpad that make it almost unusable. Can I hear from others that have this model and their experience with it?
Dell Latitude 5420 Notebook, Gray (Skin Applied), 14-in FHD (1920 x 1080), Webcam, 1x Intel Core i7 Quad (i7-1185G7) 3.00 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD.

I've got hundreds out there and the 5420 has been pretty solid for a standard laptop. I don't recall touchpad reports. Be sure to install Dell Command Update and keep it updated. 5430 has been decent, but not terribly happy with the 5440.
Who uses a touchpad anyway!
Latitude 5420 Help
Main Post:
After what feels like forever I have finally got MacOs Monterey to boot on my Dell Latitude 5420, however after hours of troubleshooting I'm still stuck on multiple parts. At this point I want to see if there's anyone out there who works on these "professionally". I'd be willing to pay someone to remote in and fix the Ktexts (if possible).
Device HardwareCPU: Intel i7 1185G7 VPro
RAM: 16GB 1x16 DDR4
Storage: 256GB SSD
Things I would want to have working that currently aren't
WIFI
Trackpad
Keyboard
Thunderbolt
CPU Boosting
Overall on this build I've gotten much farther then I ever have before getting MacOs installed, the keyboard works up until you use the trackpad and then it completely dies. I've confirmed all Ktexts installed are up to do and for Monterey. If I use a USB mouse and keyboard everything works fine, it seems the CPU is not boosting due to the fact it freezes randomly is and is very slow with basic tasks. After installing Heliport I was able to see SSID's but I could not connect to any. All USB type A's are working however my USB Type C/Thunderbolt are not.

Any opinion on the Dell Latitude 5420 ?
Main Post:
Hi,
I need a computer and I am lurking on a Latitude 5420 with the following specs :
i5 1135G7
8 Go RAM
256Go SSD
Full HD Screen IPS 250 nits
63 WH battery
3 years on-site warranty
I can get this configuration for 675€ tax included which seems to be a very good price for Europe.
My main concern is the build quality. How does this compare to a Latitude 7000 series or Lenovo E or T series ?
Also, is the keyboard OK ? This laptop will be used for word processing/heavy PDF reading and web browsing.
Thanks

250 Nits is rather dim. 300 is the bare minimum in my opinion for an all around laptop.
The new 5420 latitude. What do guys think of the i5 1145g7 with 16 gb ram? Build quality? Could I use it for the next 3-5 years

Latitudes are expensive and they are very solidly built. My household has three Latitudes that are at least four years old, all bought used, and all still chugging away. One has an SSD that is starting to fritz out, but that is an easy and cheap fix. They are business machines -- which means the people buying them expect them to work productively without fail , so they are very well engineered. This engineering is why they cost three times as much as a consumer laptop with the same specs. Latitudes tend to be underpowered for the price -- they are for buyers who want reliability before top performance. If you want a well built computer with more powerful specs, go with Dell's workstation Precision line of laptops.
Get the Pro Support for American-based tech support (it is usually included). Dell's foreign-based basic tech support is utter shit.
Latitude 5420 with 250 nits screen, is it bad? For college and work.

I'm looking to buy the Latitude 5420 after reading some recommendations here and unfortunately, the only version they have in my country is the 250 nits screen.
How bad is it? My current laptop is with 300 nits screen so I don't know how to compare these screens. And I'm unable to visit the store.

What level brightness are you using the current laptop? 100 % - perhaps not...
BTW, 250 is more than OK usage in even in balcony/terrace -occasionally.
Search for "notebookcheck review for 5420". Has details.
A "too good to be true" Latitude 5420 deal?
Main Post:
TLDR version: Got a sweet Lat. 5420 from a local start-up bankruptcy sale. Basically brand new. However it is "locked down" in windows and in the bios, etc. so I can't login to it, I can't wipe, it, etc.
No CD drive. USB ports are disabled in the Dell Bios and of course I don't have the Windows or Bios Admin passwords.
When I try to initiate a reinstall or reset to factory settings in Windows RE, that option doesn't exist (meaning somehow the ability to wipe the computer has been disabled as well in Windows RE).
So basically it's a really nice brick atm.
I haven't called Dell using the old service tag but should that be my next step or is that a dead end because the company is defunct?
Should I pull out the SSD and try to wipe it by connecting it to another computer and then reinstall it?
Spent a couple hundred bucks for a $2k laptop and I guess it was a risk but never thought they could be that locked down from the BIOS all the way to the Windows RE as well.
TIA.

Thanks everyone. Just formatted the HDD and then fresh install of windows.
Latitude 5420 i5 - ran fine for months, now it ends up like this after a couple minutes of use
Main Post:
I checked the temps, runs about 50°C... I had installed an extra 8 GB ram, I took that out just in case.
This is on a fairly fresh install of windows (like a week). It first happened while playing World of Warcraft.
Any ideas?

“ends up like this”. I watched the video with audio and I’m not clear on the problem. dGPU temp?
Laptop display is black and external display is an artifact filled Windows desktop. I think you pressed the switch display Fn button, and the normal (no artifacts) Windows desktop returned to the laptop display. You didn’t show the external display again in the video.
There’s so much white noise in the video, I can’t tell if any of the noise is the laptop fan.
What is the laptop service tag, so we can find the specs (dedicate GPU)?
